Jessie joined the ATS against her mother's wishes, and soon found herself posted to a mixed-sex Ack Ack battery. She helped defend Hull from the bombing of the Luftwaffe, and was sent to Belgium after D-Day to help protect Antwerp from V1 attacks. Today, she is a committed member of her local branch of the British Legion, selling poppies for them every November.
